i can't wait!

Okay guys. I'm so excited. I don't know why I didn't write this post sooner, but I HAVE to share! So here goes. I'm not sure how many of you know about my plan for the fall semester, probably not many, so I'll just start from the beginning.

So this fall, you'd all normally think I'm going back to Gordon for a normal semester..right? Wrong. I'm still "going to Gordon", but participating in a program called GORDON IN BOSTON! Aka, I'll be living in Boston area (Dorchester to be exact) in a house that Gordon owns, with five other people participating in the program! I get to do an internship in Boston, and take classes through the program and through other schools! I'm seriously SO excited.

So needless to say, I needed to find an internship for this program. So my summer has been a long process of writing resumes, cover letters, and applying for internships. I've been waiting and waiting to hear back, and the only person I heard back from was a sports producer at WHDH channel 7 in Boston, and I interviewed over the phone and wasn't hearing anything for a while. I was freaking out a little bit, trying to think of more options for internships. BUT - THIS PAST SUNDAY, Koon Lam, the producer, e-mailed and officially asked me to be an intern for the fall semester!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd say it's pretty safe to say I FREAKED OUT, SCREAMED AT MY MOM TO LOOK AT THE E-MAIL, AND WE COULDN'T EVEN BELIEVEE ITT!!! Gahhhh, it was SO great! So, WHDH here I come! I accepted later that night. (I didn't want to e-mail him back a HALF HOUR after he e-mailed me. Ew. Embarrassing.) So, now I'm trying to figure out now what days/shifts I'll be working. Haven't figured it out yet, but when I do, I'll let ya know! :)

So the semester is obviously going to be GREAT. I ALSO worked out that I'm going to be doing an independent study that I'm SOOOO excited about! Chris Gilbert is a local film producer in Beverly and I'll be doing some type of reporting/film editing work with him that I'm THRILLED ABOUT! He said I'll come out of it with great stuff for my portfolio! I'm just so excited, mainly because I feel like Gordon is a GREAT school, but I haven't gotten the best experience directly in the field of broadcast journalism that I want, so I feel like I'm finally getting what I'm looking for! :) It's all coming together! So, needless to say, I'm so excited for Gordon in Boston! We move in August 29th, and our group has already started writing e-mails telling each other about ourselves and what not!

I know what you're thinking. Katie, your fall sounds AWESOME...bet your summer is JUST as exciting, right? Yeah nope. My life was straight up Subway sandwiches the last week! I had over forty hours. It was insane. I almost went nuts. It gets SO busy in the summer, that literally from 11-2 the line was NON-STOP OUT THE DOOR!! It was craziness. My apron even fell off at one point! Haha, I was busy trying to find this customer's buffalo chicken sandwich that he never got. (Found it on the back counter...oops! And he was in the car halfway to his destination when he realized it wasn't there...DOUBLE OOPS!) But yeah, Subway's been insane, but still so much fun!

Other than that -- just been hanging out! Kristi's at UNH for soccer camp until tomorrow so I've been rollin' solo! It's okay though, she'll be home tomorrow night! :) This morning I had a wonderful dunks date with Laurie Foustoukos, my wonderful friend from Gorham, but she's actually living in Beverly for the summer, so I haven't seen her as much! It was so great seeing her at my favorite place - Dunks, obviously - today and catching up!
(Oldie -- maybe my junior year of high school!)

And today my mom and I walked the boulevard in Portland and then met my dad for lunch in Monument Square. That's my favorite place in the world, city center in Portland. Every one knows my favorite building, Time and Temp, is right there, and I just love the liveliness of the city streets. Wednesdays are the BEST because they have the farmer's market - get all your veggies, plants, and other random stuff! It's the best. We got Maine blueberries, sugar snap peas, and summer squash! We got lunch in the Portland Public Market and sat upstairs! So nice.

(The best building in Maine, BY FAR!!!)

Anything else in my life? Hmm, here's random bits!

- Bought a Red Sox hat the other day at Olympia because A. Lost my old one and B. It was my reward to myself for getting the internship!
- Had a soccer game Monday night. We had ten people and no goalie. Needless to say, score was 8-1. ROUGH.

OH MAN - and we need to talk about ... BORDERS CLOSING? WHAT THEEE HECKKK!!! I love Borders. Don't get me wrong, I don't read. Me+Reading=No. SOMETIMES I DO THOUGH! And I loved going in and just exploring it all the time! And my sister's crushed, she LOVED reading. AND MY MOM, THE ENGLISH TEACHER, IS MAD TOO! Ahh, I don't get it. Gonna be SO SO WEIRD without it!

Only other thing on my mind is that I can't wait for the Smurf movie. I am by no means a Smurfs fan at all, but I LOVE KATY PERRY, and she's in it, AKA it's going to be perfection. Kristi and I will see it, DEFINITELY! Comes out Friday! PUMPED!

Alright, guess that's all for now! I gotta go check out what I'm smelling -- the blueberry coffee cake that my mom just put in the oven!! YUUUUUMM!!!

Thought to end with:
"And if dreams and memories sometimes get confused, then that's the way it should be. every kid deserves to be a hero. every kid already is."

Heard Kevin Arnold say this on The Wonder Years last night! Such the best show ever inventedddddddd!!! Never gets old!

10 thoughts in my head right now

1. I've worked too many hours at subway in the past week, but at the same time I love it!
2. I can't wait to eat Thai food with my dad and sister at Pom's in Portland :) YUM!
3. Air Buds a classic, I'm glad channel 110 recognizes that and is playing it right now.
4. I don't wanna be without Krit for a week starting tomorrow!
5. I'm so glad I had a glass of wine with my long lost best friend Matt last night.
6. Why did Amy Winehouse die? :/ so sad.
7. I'm glad there's a cool breeze today. Feels SO much better than yesterday.
8. I'm glad the show "Best Thing I Ever Ate" showed a sundae from SMUGGLERS in CAPE COD! I've BEEN THEREEEE!!!!! COOLEST THING EVER?! Yeah.
9. I wonder how Evan (my Subway co-worker) is surviving his first 8 hour shift after breaking and dislocating his hand earlier this week.
10. If I could just spend a full day with Will, Grace, Jack, and Karen, my life would be complete.

And there ya have it. Straight from my brainnnnnn!

it's hot out.

So, I mean I guess it isn't news to anyone that it is SO HOT OUTSIDE! I guess Maine hasn't had a day this hot in like YEARS. According to weather.com, right now, at 8:30am in Gorham it's already 89 degrees. WOWOWOWW, and by mid afternoon it will be in the 90s! I think it would be kind of sick to break 100, even though it might be deathly, but it would still be cool. Like bam, we did it! Haha, good thing I'll be at Subway. ALL. DAY. Why you ask? Well, I stupidly decided to cover someone's 11:30-2:30 shift this afternoon, on top of my 4-9 shift this afternoon. Ughhhh. Good cash, but going to be an extremely long day! But I mean I love Subway. I have so much fun at work. I think it's because I'm like finally comfortable there and I love everyone who works there, so it's always just fun! I compare like this summer to two summers ago when I was new, OH MY GOSH SO DIFFERENT! I barely spoke that summer. Now, they can't get me to shut up! Gah, just so fun. I'm sure NO ONE who knows me would guess this, but they get mad at me a lot because I tend to be a mess when I make sandwiches. Say you come into Subway, look at the onions and see a piece of pickle in there, or if you look at the tomatoes and see spinach covering them, that's most likely my doing. I tend to be a little too artistic as a sandwich artist, I guess.

But today is also important because it's my GRANDMA'S BIRTHDAY! YEA YEA YEA! I remembered it right when I woke up this morning. Gran is 81 years old and still goin' strong! Gotta love her.

But, as for my actual life since I last updated, hasn't been too crazy. Honestly, I've been working a lot, and if I'm not working, I'm usually just hanging out with my sister. We have a little too much fun doing absolutely nothing. Give us a television and each other and we're entertained for hours. But she leaves for school in less than 20 days, because she has pre-season, and she actually goes to school next week too to run soccer camp. So I'll be Kristi-less, and I'll have absolutely NOTHING to do with myself. GAHH WHAT TO DO!

But I do have to say we had a great night last night. We went out to Flatbreads in Portland for dinner, because my parents went to a friend's! It was so fun! We are both first of all OBSESSED with Portland, so just being there is always fun, and obviously Flatbreads is AMAZING. We got a gluten free (for Kristi, duh) pizza with like caramelized onions, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, mushrooms, like and I don't even know the great cheese and herbs that were on there, but it was so good! Ohhh and we got a salad with roasted vegetables on that, and it was wonderful. After that, we walked around Portland and stopped at this like POPCORN place where they make all different flavors of popcorn! We sampled four: Maine Maple, Cinnamon Toast, Dill Pickle, and Buffalo. MAINE MAPLE WAS THE BEST, so we bought some!!! DUHHHHHH soo good!!! So now we have that at our house to look forward to. :)

Trying to think if anything else exciting has happened in my life since Winnie the Pooh hahah! But not really. I mean, I know Pooh is tough to beat, so I understand. OH, I have to say that we did watch the World Cup, as you know, because my last post was ALLLLLL ABOUT IT! It was SUCH an intense game, zero-zero at halftime. I was thrilled when the US went up by one, but then I wanted Japan to make it interesting, and they did when they scored! I LOVED that it went into overtime, and then OVERTIME GOT INTENSE WHEN BOTH TEAMS SCORED! So it meant PENALTY KICKS! How much did this remind me of 1999?!?!?! Seriously. Wow. But SADLY, the US couldn't get it together in PK's. :( Nothin' like those 99ers. So Japan won. Congrats to Japan, poor US though. My only conclusion: you just can't get better than 99. LOVE YOU MIA, LOVE YOU BRANDI!!

Actually, television-wise, I do NEEED to mention something. My sister and I have a new show we're obsessed with, and I want everyone to give it a chance. I'll be honest, I judged it HARD CORE before I watched it, and now I regret everything I said. The show: HOT IN CLEVELAND!

I'd say it's like a modern-day Golden Girls, which obviously it is because BETTY WHITE is in it, duh! Basically just these four women that live together, and it's hilarious. I've seen only like three episodes but I plan on seeing every single one multiple times. DUH. I need to. I love it. It's wicked funny. My favorite is Melanie - aka Valerie Bertinelli! She's the best. Anyway - check it out and let me know what you think. Don't judge it. One of life's biggest lessons, jeesh. Blew right up in my face.

Alright well, I'll stop babbling on about pizza and sitcoms to you, and get ready for my actual life. I also should probably stop talking on Facebook to my mother who's sitting in the garage. (We're comparing what room is hotter.) WOW MY LIFE'S A THRILLER! Bet you're hanging on every word. Alright, well, more to come later I'm sure!

EVERYONE STAY COOL TODAY. Here's my suggestion:

LOVEE IT.

ALSO - just heard Kelly Ripa say "When I was vacationing in Maine this past weekend..." WHAT THE HECK? WHERE WAS I? WHY DIDN'T I MEET HER? So upset. But she was here. THAT'S AWESOME. Love ya Kel! Hope you enjoyed this GREAT STATEE!

Okay, really going now. LOVES LOVES!

big big day

"Big big day" is a phrase my dad uses all the time on exciting days. Before I even have my first cup of coffee in the morning, my dad will look at me, smile and say, "big big day!" When I left for college, when I had soccer games, when I went into news 8, they were all "big big days". Today is a big big day, though, not for me, but for the US women's soccer team! They're playing in the Women's World Cup!!!!! Gah, so exciting. Today at 2pm on ESPN, everyone better watch! Of course, lucky me, I can't watch, I have to work at Subway at 11:30. UGH. But whatevs - I will work hard to get out early, drive as fast as I can home, and SEE THE GAMEEE!! GOOO USAAAAA! I'm watching in spirit! I'm going to have my mom text me updates the WHOLE time, of course.

I think my favorite part about watching this World Cup is that it brings me back to the '99 World Cup, which was SERIOUSLY INCREDIBLE! Everyone remember it? US women won the final against China in penalty kicks! SUCH A GREAT TIME. I was 9 years old and OBSESSED with Mia Hamm. My sister loved Brandi Chastain, my mom loved Joy Fawcett, dad...not sure? But we were all SUCH big fans of the team! We watched every game, which was kind of tricky because we didn't have cable. So we watched them at friends houses, or had people tape them for us, and the semi-final we even watched at a bar! Keep in mind, I'm 9 and my sister is 8. At a bar. Good stuff. We were vacationing in Point Judith, Rhode Island when we watched the final game. It was such a long and intense game, scoreless after two halves and extra time, and finally the US won in PKs! I remember every emotion I felt during that game. Freaked out when Michelle Akers got subbed out, ecstatic when Kristine Lilly saved a header headed for goal, nervous when I found out Brandi was taking the last kick! But the feeling I will never forget is the feeling when Brandi scored and ripped her shirt off - utter BLISS! I was so happy - my summer had been MADE! My heroes were now WORLD CHAMPIONS.

YES BRANDI!

And I can safely say that Brandi was such an inspiration to me with her pulling her shirt off after she scored - that I practiced this in my yard until I had it perfect. I'd put up my pugg pop-up soccer nets, throw on a bathing suit top, put on my Mia Hamm jersey, kick the ball into the net, and then rip it off and get on my knees in celebration, JUST like her. I'd say I mastered it - and I'm sure all the neighbors would agree.

So my hope for today is that what happened for me can happen for all the other 9 year olds out there. Win or lose, I just hope this team can inspire young girls like they 99 team inspired me. I will never forget those girls, and they will always be my heroes! But I have to root on this new team now -- and put all my faith in them! Let's go USA!

As for my LIFE since a few days ago -- it's been pretty normal! Worked some long hours at Subway, hung out with the fam, ya know, the normal stuff. But my favorite part was two nights ago -- because as I'm SURE YOU ALL KNOW - WINNIE THE POOH CAME OUT TO THEATERS ON JULY 15TH! So clearly my sister and I went that night. I worked until 8 - so we went at 9:10! Yup, while everyone else was lining up for Harry Potter in their costumes, we went to Pooh...in our sweats. It was AWESOME. Hilarious, cute, everything we wanted it to be it was. It was only like an hour and nine minutes long, but it was so great just to be hanging with the Pooh gang again! Everyone loved it. My sister and I like legit couldn't stop laughing at parts! Ah, so great. Tigger was always my fav as a kid - but now I'd have to say it's a toss up because Pooh is just SO great too! I won't give away any plot stuff or anything because everyone just needs to see it for themselves DUH! But seriously, go.

Here's a review I found, just to get you PUMPED!

"One would have to have a heart of cold temperament to find much — if anything — wrong with the animated adventure ‘Winnie the Pooh’…Brought to you by some of the Disney folk who delivered last month’s noisy, flashy ‘Cars 2, ‘ this hand-drawn tale is as elegantly simple as that sequel is voraciously, impressively computer-rendered.” [Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post]

Alright, well, that's about all I have for today ... I'm off to the gym, then to work, and then hopefully back to catch the end of the World Cup game! GOO GOOO USSSAAAAA! I'll be updating soon - hopefully my life will consist of more than Subway sandwiches and children's movies, but hey, I'm not complaining! (PS - my family also watched Pete's Dragon last night) HAHA WOW LOVE MY LIFE! Anyway, I'll write again soon!

In the meantime, everyone should listen to "Letter to Me" by Brad Paisley. It came out a little bit ago - but I heard it yesterday and I had forgotten how good it was! Just a good listen if you're bored! MAKES YA GO BACK IN TIME! :)

Alright -- Love, Soccer, and Pooh!

new blog? here goes nothing

So here's the thing. I got home from Spain a month ago, and I've been loving life this summer at home ever since. It's been great - working at Subway, playing in a women's soccer league, visiting the Cape, and mainly hanging out with my sister, which of course has been the BEST! But I've missed blogging, and sometimes I have too much free time on my hands where I have no idea what to do with myself, so I decided to start up the blog again. I mean, granted I may not get as many readers, considering I'm not having wild European adventures, but I think my life here can be pretty interesting, to say the least!

So I guess I should start updating on what I've been up to since Spain. Hmm, alright, well like I said I've been working at Subway. It's GREAT! Sounds like it could be boring, but I have so much fun there! My manager is HILARIOUS, and there's a GREAT crew there that just gets along well and has fun while making the sandwiches. I mean, I'd say I'm getting to be a pro, I have worked there for three summers and on school vacations. Can't tell you why I still don't understand the bread making process, but it's fine!

So, let's see, what else. I'm also playing on a women's league soccer team with my sister. It's a bunch of girls from USM on our team, and it's Monday or Wednesday nights during the week. It's a lot of fun and we just play for an hour. It can be pretty competitive, depending on what team you play. Some teams are young and all about winning, while others are like 40-year olds trying to make it until their next sub! But it's a great time, and always a SOLID work out!

And it wouldn't be considered summer if I didn't go to the CAPE, my favorite place in the world! :) We usually go for a week, but we didn't go as long this year because my aunt Mimi just got a new job and so couldn't take the entire week off, obviously! So Krit and I went down on a Tuesday, and first stayed with Dma for a night in Sudbury, which was great! Got there, hung out for a little bit, and then Dma wanted us to teach her Bananagrams, which she had. NEEDLESS TO SAY WE'RE BOTH NOW OBSESSED WITH BANANAGRAMS! It's only the greatest gameeeee! So anyway, we hung out with her for the night, did a little shopping and Dunks in the morning, and then headed off to the Cape that afternoon! When we got there, there was already a bunch of our fam there which was great! My grandma (on dad's side, Gran), my uncle Rick, and his sons Ben and Paul! We also had picked up my cousin Stanley along the way, so he was there too! So we all just hung out for the night. My aunt Mimi came that night too, but had to leave at 5am the next day to get back for her job! ROUGH. But anyway, it was a great weekend on the Cape! We hung out with the family, we got to the beach, did our routine trips to Dunkin Donuts (Me, Kristi, and my aunt -- we love our Dunks rituals together! Always a blast :) ) And my favorite part was when we celebrated my 21st birthday! DUH :) So much fun. My birthday's July 2nd, so it was Saturday night! My mom and Dad came down to the Cape -- they usually don't come, but this time they did because it was SPECIAL DUH! So we went out to lunch with them at the Mercantile, and it was really good! They have really cool like sandwiches and salads, and then we all got iced chais from The Underground Bakery, and sat in the gazebo in the center of town and just reminisced and chatted for a few hours! It was great. After that, we went home and went to the beach with a bunch of my family for the afternoon! So great. I love to go to the beach on the Cape mid afternoon/night time. It's so great - more calm and really relaxing and watching the sun go down is so nice :)

So - I know what you're thinking. 21 - duh, wheres the DRIIIINKS? Don't worry. Didn't forget that part. So that day, Kristi and I went to buy my first bottle of alcohol. We're both obsessed with Bethenny Frankel, so we wanted to buy her Skinnygirl margarita. So we thought we were awesome going to buy it, I couldn't wait to show them my ID, but then when they asked for Kristi's too, we kind of got coned. We couldn't buy it OBVIOUSLY because she's not 21. Fail. So we had to go to a different store and I had to go in alone! Haha, figures it would fail. But it's alright, because we eventually got to have our margaritas on the Cape later that night and it was great! :)

So we had margaritas, and I can definitely say I felt my first ever buzz! Haha, but it was so much fun just to hang out and be with my family on my 21st. We had dinner, ice cream cake from Smugglers, and then topped the night of with some Bailey's coffee liquor, because as we all know I'm obsessed with coffee, so this just was obvious that I had to have it! Later that night we were all sitting around the fire outside, and my aunt had everyone give speeches about me and toast to my being 21. I'll admit it - I LOVED IT, and I seriously was so happy to be with my family and to have the greatest family in the WORLD on my 21st! Greatest present I can ask for. :)

And as some of you know - Cape Cod, our ritual is flashlight tag, so after dinner and toasting, all the kids set out to play. My sister and I were kind of over it, so we just chilled with my aunt for a little. Don't ask me how we all ended up dancing in the street, because I can't explain how it happened. I think it was because we went for a walk with my aunt, and then my cousin Kenny got in his car and got ready to leave. The lights were shining on the street and his music was loud. Apparently that meant dance party. My aunt got on the street and started dancing, I followed, then my sister, and eventually everyone was out on the street/dance floor dancing the night away! It was amazing and so much fun, the perfect way to end a great day!

Gotta say this part too - very important piece of advice I received on my birthday. Earlier that day, my aunt had stopped some RANDOM guy at the Dennis Public Market, told him it was my 21st birthday, and asked if he had any advice for me. His advice was "Never drink with anyone you don't trust." I'd say it's pretty safe to say I followed his advice :) Love my family!

So, that was kind of the gist of our Cape Cod visit! We left and came home Sunday afternoon. Since then, just been working and enjoying summer! Went to Cassie and Will's wedding last weekend, two people from my school who got married! I was there the day they started dating!!!! Such a fun wedding! Loved being a part of it! And it was my friend Corey's 21st birthday the other day, the 12th, so we celebrated at Margaritas in Portland! :) Definitely fun times!

AND I'VE OF COURSE BEEN LOVING WATCHING THE WORLD CUP!!!!! We watched the game two days ago of the US women and I'm SO EXCITED AND HAPPY THAT THEY ARE GOING TO THE WORLD CUP!!!!! Of course I have to work Sunday and can't watch, but I'm so cheering them on! Kristi and I represented in our old Hamm and Chastain jerseys. Even though they aren't on the team anymore, I still give them all the credit. LOVE YOU MIA!

So I know this was kind of a quick update - and there's a ton of stuff I wrote about and a ton that I probably forgot too - but it's alright! Just wanted to get this thing going. I've had this first post saved WAY too long now, so I had to just get it up and out there! I will definitely post again soon! Hope my life is interesting enough to keep you reading!

Until next time!
Katie
